A Compendium of 1980s Design Excess, in One House

Anyone interested in architecture and/or interior design should follow Kate Wagner's site McMansion Hell for a laugh and a look at what can go wrong when you have more money than taste. Wagner appears to have found her Holy Grail- a house with something to snark about in every room, and in every corner of each room. The 7-bedroom 4.5-bathroom home is listed at $5 million. Built in 1981, it expresses all the excess of the time, squared.

As you can see above, the exterior is a collection of many different styles all mashed together. The interior has oversized rooms crammed with decoration gone wild. The foyer resembles a shopping mall courtyard, complete with trees and a water feature. The living room is the size of a ballroom, with a fireplace that weighs more than most houses. The other rooms have commentary that explains why the whole design is so unsettling. Take a tour of the Illinois house of the month at McMansion Hell. -via Nag on the Lake ā€‹
