Bejeweled Carpet at the Royal Palace Amsterdam by Artist Suzan Drummen

Suzan Drummen, a Dutch artist, has been invited to collaborate with 17 other artists to create an artwork that engages in a dialogue with the Royal Palace in honor of the 150th anniversary of the Netherlands' Royal Award for Modern Painting, Trailblazers.

Drummen is an Amsterdam-based visual artist who is recognized for her obsession with dazzling and gleaming materials. One of her most notable and recent works was the bejeweled carpet with kaleidoscopic patterns and hues on the floor of a regal parlor of the Royal Palace. She began without a template or strategy in mind, simply following her instincts and adventurous side, then gradually planned the alignment of patterns and gems meticulously and methodically.

They installed the carpet over nine days with the help of her three assistants, placing each dazzling rhinestone by hand, allowing them to adapt organically to the room's color, light, and ambience. The carpet installation by Drummen is a direct response to the building's Golden Age architecture and the majestic Empire furniture that adorns the space.
