Got $597,000? Buy a Fort.

The Defensible Barracks at Pembroke Dock lies on a commanding position over the Milford Haven waterway in southwestern Wales. Seizing it early in an, er, adventure, would give provide certain advantages.

And by “seizing” I mean “buying” the fort because it’s for sale. Bids must start at £500,000, which is about $597,000 USD. That investment gives you possession of a former Royal Marines barracks built during the 1840s. It has a moat, gun loops, and cannon batteries. There are rooms and facilities for a large body of men and their equipment on 4.47 acres.

It’s something of a fixer-upper, as the property has decayed since it last saw active use during World War II. But I wouldn’t want to flip this property. This is definitely the sort of home I’d want to retire into.

From Strutt & Parker:

The barracks was built between 1841 and 1846 to house the dockyard's garrison of Royal Marines and to cover the landward side of the dockyard from an infantry assault. It was probably the last 'trace bastion' fort built in Europe.

Famous residents of the barracks include Gordon of Khartoum, who was later deployed to join the fighting in Crimea, and Arthur Lowe, who played Captain Mainwaring in Dad's Army!
