The pandemic and the worldwide lockdowns that follow truly bring out the creativity out of people, Ben Smith included. When the lockdowns hit and he couldn’t freely travel, the North Park, San Diego, resident and mathematician got an idea to build replicas of all the places he would like to see… using LEGO bricks.
Fast forward a couple of years, Smith has now completed dozens of “buildings”, using tens of thousand dollars worth of LEGO bricks. Smith has replicated many San Diego landmarks such as St. Patrick's Catholic Church, the Casbah, Live Wire, Fall Brewing, Soda Bar -- even the North Park neighborhood sign.
And now, the collection is set to be exhibited for a fundraising event at the Tribune Pizza - which happens to be one of the spots Smith modeled. The plan was originally for a December showing, but Smith was struck with coronavirus so it was delayed. This March, Smith’s Lego replicas will finally be on display to the public for $10 a ticket. There will be auctions and other donation experiences as well.
If you can't make it to the exhibit, Smith has posted his creations over at his Instagram page: @northparklego
