Pantone has announced it's Color of the Year for 2022: Very Peri 17-3938. This one's a bit different from previous Colors of the Year in that they created an entirely new color for the first time since launching the annual announcement in 2000. Very Peri is what you and I know as periwinkle, with an added reddish undertone.
Pantone Executive Director Leatrice Eiseman said, in a statement: "As we move into a world of unprecedented change, the selection of PANTONE 17-3938 Very Peri brings a novel perspective and vision of the trusted and beloved blue color family, encompassing the qualities of the blues, yet at the same time possessing a violet-red undertone, PANTONE 17-3938 Very Peri displays a spritely, joyous attitude and dynamic presence that encourages courageous creativity and imaginative expression."
Fast Company describes the color as a return to the Y2K zeitgeist, with the iridescence of the red undertone invoking technology, while the periwinkle still clings to nature somewhat. Pantone uses words like "carefree confidence" and "daring curiosity." How well that will translate into tennis shoes or kitchen decor is another question. The red undertone is hard to see in digital art, which is why Pantone's announcement pictures and video uses two colors. Still, the Color of the Year is one color, unlike 2021, when the Color of the Year was Ultimate Gray and Illuminating Yellow.
