The Oldest Home on the American Real Estate Market

Europeans will laugh, but Americans rarely get a chance to buy a 300-year old house. The Stephen Bryant house in Plympton, Massachusetts, was built in 1669 and expanded in 1703. And it's for sale. Plympton was once a part of the Plymouth Rock community, and Stephen Bryant was a Pilgrim who built this house for his family. The expansion was done under the ownership of the community's doctor. Now 355 years later, it is officially the oldest house listed on the American real estate market. The current owners have spent the past 31 years magnificently restoring the house to its colonial state, using period-appropriate materials like hand hewn beams, reclaimed timber, wide plank floors, and antique lighting fixtures. There are six fireplaces!

The house has three bedrooms and two bathrooms in 2,503 square feet of interior space on two acres appropriate for horses. While a tour through the home is like stepping back in time, you can bet the original house did not have bathrooms, nor central heat, nor a garage. But it does now. Modern amenities are either hidden, like the electrical outlets, or unobtrusive, like the refrigerator. The listing does not mention whether any of that gorgeous antique furniture is included.

The Stephen Bryant house sits among five other homes from the colonial period in a historic neighborhood. The asking place is $800,000. See 42 photos of this old house at the real estate listing.
